Anarko-brat?

Stay tuned,

Dear Machine

I just saw a video about iFixit and their quest for less electronic waste. It got me thinking about my own laptop. What it's been trough, how many times I fixed it and how well it has served me.

I bought my laptop three and a half years ago, in late 2006. It was fairly expensive, about 1000 €/$, and I picked it with extreme care. It was small and light, 12.1 inch screen and 1.7 kg, yet it was fairly powerful back then (1.8 GHz dual core) and it's still working just fine.

Since I got it I have:
- twice reinstalled Windows XP.
- increased the RAM from 1 Gb to 2 Gb.
- replaced the 120 Gb harddrive with a 320 Gb one.
- replaced the battery twice.
- changed the power unit.
- repainted the lid.

It has been with me to run-down hostels in London and Berlin, two summer festivals, to the countryside, on sailing trips and on several jobs in many different industries. It has been my companion while living in Stockholm, Karlskrona, Prague, Berlin, and now in Malmö. Dear machine, thank you.

Malmö + happiness = ?

Dear blog,

After travelling the world for a while now, I am now carefully settling in Malmö. I looked through my Hyper Island application recently and was sort of sad to realize that I had more fun back then. My designs were full of life and my career was blooming. Now I'm jobless and uninspired. What happened?

I'll do my best to find my way back to my old self.

Until then,

Star Wars vs ISS

OK, so the astronauts have installed the Cupola window on the International Space Station. At last we are catching up the Science fiction I grew up with, albeit in a more homely and nice way:

I wish the Emperor of Star Wars would play the guitar in his window as well.

I'm translating The Ethical Slut

I recently bought and read "The Ethical Slut" by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy. It's already a classic in poly circles, and last year it came out in its second edition. Having worked as a translator for several years I started to play with the idea of translating it into Swedish in my spare time.

I have no idea how to work out the details with the publishers, but I'm sure something can be arranged. My strategy is to get started and once I'm almost finished I'll get some famous Swedish sexologists behind me and then start wooing the original authors, and then we'll see.

Looking for jobs is like dating.

I applied to some jobs the last few moths, and one of them seems to be going well: two interviews, and I was told it's between me and one other guy. I should have gotten word last Tuesday but nothing, so I called up, and apparently it was postponed until last Friday, and still I got nothing. I plan to call them tomorrow, Monday, to ask again what's up. Have they decided to go with the other guy, but just letting me hang until the have ink on paper, just in case? Or are they just normally busy and naturally don't think this is as big a deal as I do?

This thing happened to me two years ago. I set my sights on an internship at R/GA in New York, after reading only good stuff about their digital plans. I was so convinced they'd be thrilled to have me, a Hyper Island wiz-kid, that I turned down several other offers, including a well paid internship at Domani Studios in Brooklyn. The battle for a reply back from R/GA dragged on for months, and when I realized I didn't get it I had to go with the one in Prague.

Where would I have been today if I'd said yes to Domani? And avoided wasting my time in that dead-end hell-hole in the Czech republic?

I'll wait for the final verdict, but I'm not holding my breath. Starting tomorrow I will seriously carpet the market in Malmö, Copenhagen, Gothenburg and even Stockholm. I have studied too much to justify living with my parents.

Update: I called my contact and he was abroad on a job. I will have to wait until next week. WTH.

Does the iPad have partial backlighting?

Remember the old patent that Apple filed back in 2007? You know the one with "secondary backlighting"? Have a look here. I understood it as a power saving method that turns off the backlight in the screen surface areas where it's not needed.

It seem like Apples spanking new iPad will have lots of black surfaces, if not when using your unmodified iPhone apps in native size, then at least when watching widescreen movies on a 4:3 screen. If they want to live up to the advertised "10 hours of battery time" then they probably need to use every trick in the book, right?

On the other hand they didn't brag about any partial backlit during the presentation, and they would right? Perhaps not, knowing Apple. I can't wait for the first teardown to get the answer to this one.
